Another first for the Middle East. Bahrain’s busy skyline now includes the world’s first building with integrated wind turbines! It is a twin sky-scraper complex that generates power from the on-shore Gulf breeze ‘funnelling’ through it (the wind has to come at it from the right direction, as the turbines don’t turn). There are three massive turbines, each with 29m diameter blades, providing 11-15% of the building’s energy needs. Wow! Of course, this concept has been around for a while, just waiting for someone to try it. Grapevine has it that a similar design for New York’s ‘Freedom Towers’ was rejected. Now, architects all over the world will be watching….
