Mindset 3.0

28Mar07
escaping mindset Today, an interesting report was quietly launched at Skoll World Forum which I’ve been attending. SustainAblity one of my favourite consulting firms and think-tank, is increasingly referring to something they call Mindset 3.0. Just as software morphs through successive generations, 1.0, 2.0 and so on, the business case for engaging with sustainability challenges has evolved.

Their thesis is: if 1.0 was driven by regulators and promoted a compliance mindset in business, 2.0 has been more about corporate citizenship, based on transparency, accountability and a growing array of voluntary initiatives, and 3.0 seeks ‘transformative markets and sustainability outcomes’, or what economist Joseph Schumpter has called ‘creative destruction’.

Certainly in sectors such as energy, where we once saw a handful of environmentalists pioneering the development of solar and wind, we now see a high-growth industry with substantial investment flowing in.

One Response to “Mindset 3.0”

The opportunity for Mindset 3.0 is enormous. The problem: organizations, corporations, governments and people will have to make this a priority and not simply a fad from which to profit. At it’s core, this is about believing in innovation, ingenuity and the willingness of people to tear down their existing mental models. We are doing this at our site at http://www.spangy.com where we provide an opportunity for enterprising organizations from developing nations to advertise for “free”.
